Pat Benson: Feels Like 88 For Vols

“It feels like ‘98” has been a saying in Tennessee for two decades now. Honestly, it’s more of a clarion call for the Vols fan base whenever a little extra juice or assurance is needed. But if this team can’t turn things around tonight against the BYU Cougars, then things will soon feel like ’88. The last time the Vols started the season 0-2 was in 1988. To put that into context, Ronald Reagan was in the White House and Donald Trump was teasing a presidential run for the Reform Party.

A grueling start to the 1988 season (0-6) ended with five straight wins. During last week’s broadcast, ESPN repeatedly showed how the Vols must play three top-10 teams in their first seven games. If it comes as any consolation to the big orange faithful, their schedule gets considerably easier after the third Sunday in October. (Rattling off five consecutive wins is certainly a possibility).

Additionally, attendance and apathy weren’t a problem in 1988. The Vols wore all orange in front of 90,000 fans against Alabama (Neyland Stadium held less seats at that time). If this team starts 0-2, they might struggle to get 90,000 at a single game the rest of the season without a lot of help from other fan bases.

However, context is important when comparing the 1988 and 2019 seasons. The 1988 season was an aberration. A 5-6 campaign sandwiched between 10- and 11-win seasons, respectively. This Vols team is coming off 4- and 5-win seasons, respectively.

Also, the last time the Vols fell to 0-2 to start the season; the coaching was not in question. Johnny Majors was proven and unquestioned, truly he was beyond reproach. Meanwhile, Jeremy Pruitt is a second-year coach. And his seat is already heating up.

Tennessee has a chance to avoid repeating history if they defeat BYU tonight. Looking ahead at the schedule, they must win every single winnable game to salvage any momentum from Coach Pruitt’s first season. If the Cougars prevail tonight, it might start feeling like ’88 soon.
