KNOXVILLE -- Comments from head coach Phillip Fulmer on 2006 Tennessee football signees.

“I am very pleased with this class of new Volunteers. We addressed our needs for the most part and signed young men I believe will develop because of their character and work ethic. Certainly there are some that can and will impact our team immediately.

“The staff did a good job and our current players, serving as hosts, did a great job when we got prospects to campus. Everyone had to really fight hard, especially coming off a poor season. We all had to show the athletes and their families that Tennessee has been and always will be about winning championships and developing young men.

“As I say every year, the key factors in the success of this class will be not only their physical ability but their ability to work hard, learn and respond to the demands of social adjustment, handling college academics and new challenges on the field of play.

“It will be a fun group of young men to coach and be around.”

Volunteers Signee Notebook

- Jacques McClendon brings the Volunteer total to 65 PARADE All-America signees. PARADE began naming its All-America team in 1963.

- Today’s signing class includes prospects from a dozen different states for the third consecutive year. In Phillip Fulmer’s 13 recruiting classes, UT has had signees from at least 10 states on 10 different occasions. The most states represented were 15 in 2000.

- Signees Chad Cunningham and Lee Smith are sons of former Vols. Rory Cunningham played here as an offensive guard from 1979-81, while Daryle Smith was an offensive tackle from 1984-86.

- Dorian Davis from Iowa City, Iowa., could become the Vols’ sixth letterman all-time from the Hawkeye State. Tennessee has had only one letterman from Iowa (Chris Benson, 1989) since Vol legend Col. Gene Moeller in 1951-52.
